Abstract

College affordability along with the complexity of financial aid estimation and application process are leading reasons for which low-income high school students in the United States fail to continue their education. The main objective of this project is to increase the accessibility, intuitiveness, and transparency of college affordability for students, policy makers, and institutions. Using data visualization, we aim to present users with a comprehensive breakdown of the cost of higher education. Our work covers thee different areas: data gathering and cleaning, multi-view visualization, and contribution estimate refinement. By its exploratory nature, this project serves as a means to narrowing down design options, with an emphasis on user experience (UX), and informing the development of future project versions.
